A walk-in color in the Louis Vuitton artycapucines handbag collection 2022
As a boundless source of creativity, the Capucines bag embarks on a 2022 voyage in the artistic sky with the Artycapucines Chapter 4 collection.
Six contemporary artists Daniel Buren, Kennedy Yanko, Park Seo-Bo, Amélie Bertrand, Peter Marino, and Ugo Rondinone bring their unique artistic vision and thinking to the Capucines. With Artycapucines, the bag becomes the main material for artists to create contemporary artworks.
Artycapucines is the meeting of art and fashion. The quintessence of craftsmanship of Louis Vuitton artisans is in sync with the aesthetic and artistic concepts of the artists.
Daniel Buren brings the famous Trompe-l’œil visual trick and monochrome stripes to Artycapucines. A famous French conceptual artist, Buren plays with shapes to create Artycapucines from two shapes: a trapezoid and a circle.
The handle of the bag is made of resin, semicircular. The bag handle is polished, becoming a complete circle, reflecting images on both sides of the bag. The black and white stripes, the signature of Buren’s design appear on Artycapucines.
In order for these stripes to appear flawless, the French fashion house slightly changed the design of the Capucines. The bag is designed in two symmetrical halves, crafted from two colors of matte Taurillon leather.
For the first time, an Artycapucines design appears in four color versions. Buren’s Artycapucines appear in four color pairs: white–orange; white–green; black and white; black-red. The four color pairs are reminiscent of the artist’s oversized Observatory of Light work, shown at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, in 2016.
Kennedy Yanko, an American artist, is famous for his works on metal and “paint”. Topcoat is a Kennedy Yanko-exclusive material, created by pouring a large amount of paint, allowing it to dry naturally. This paint when dry is as thin as paper, she sculpts it into a work of art. The result: works that are both solid and as soft as water.
With Artycapucines, Kennedy Yanko brings this unique artistic effect into a completely new material: leather. To recreate the signature aesthetic of the female artist, the body of the front pocket is 3D printed. The surface of the material has a rust effect, by the delicate touches of gold.
Kennedy Yanko’s 2022 version of the Artycapucines handbag is not only visually powerful but also versatile. The handle of the bag is removable, to become a clutch.
Park Seo-Bo belongs to the first generation of contemporary Korean artists. He is the most famous artist in the country kimchi. Park Seo-Bo is the creator of Dansaekhwa, a school that has contributed to changing the artistic face of Korea.
With Artycapucines, the great tree of Korean art recreates the famous series of Écritures (2016) works on calf skin. The emotions of being immersed in nature were recreated by Park Seo-Bo on Artycapucines, with the help of her nephew: designer Park Jifan.
To recreate the bold texture of nature, the calfskin is treated with a brush-like “coup de pinceau” effect. Next, the artists will spray 3D rubber meticulously to every detail, based on the original drawing, before applying it to the leather material. To ensure the perfection of the work, the two bright red and dark red colors of the bag are hand-painted patina by Louis Vuitton artisans.
Amélie Bertrand experimented with hand spray painting techniques, conveying bright colors and phosphorescence. This is the first Capucines bag with a glow-in-the-dark strap.
The French female artist made her mark with a style of psychedelic motifs. Densely repeated in her works are chains, camouflage patterns, tropical plants, and flowers. All are conveyed by bright colors, and clear hierarchy. Amélie Bertrand reflects her artistic imprint on Artycapucines through colors and materials.
Thanks to the superior color treatment, Amélie Bertrand’s Artycapucines is also a game of materials. Plastic bag handle. The inside and outside of the bag are plaid. Rivet pocket base. The long strap of the bag is hand-sewn from warm phosphorescent threads.
On the basis of calfskin, the vibrant color game of Artycapucines is initiated by meticulous hand-painted spray painting technique; then decorated with luminous borders. Amélie Bertrand’s Artycapucines 2022 handbag version is playful with oversized flowers, and decorative chains. These are two familiar aesthetic motifs of female artists.
Kaleidoscope metallic chain, thanks to the scarabeo plating process. The same technique applies to the LV logo and the heritage Monogram flower studs on the flap.
The New York-based architect is known as the man who redefines modern luxury. During his career, he has won many awards, with works emphasizing architecture and interiors.
Artycapucines was inspired by a medieval box he saw in a building in Venice. The box has straps and buckles in a medieval motif. This detail is reproduced by the architect in the bag.
Black monochrome Artycapucines are composed of panels of calfskin, joined together, and fixed with rivets. A total of 315 rivets cover the surface of the bag, creating a visual and tactile effect. The front of the bag also has a unique sliding buckle, inspired by the classic chest. The black metal bar of the buckle secures the lid of the bag, decorated with an enameled Monogram flower.
Color is a way of expressing the artistic personality of Ugo Rondinone, a Swiss artist. With Artcapucines, he brings two archetypal symbols that are inherently associated with him: the clown and the rainbow. The Harlequin pattern on the bag is made up of nearly 15,000 beads, hand-stitched to the surface. This process took more than 100 hours to create each piece.
500 of these are 3D-printed, floral motifs, inspired by Rondinone’s 1988 series of sculptures. They are also reminiscent of Louis Vuitton’s heritage Monogram motif. The handle of the bag is made of transparent resin. When the light shines through, the cheerful colors on the handle will shine on the lid of the bag. All make a joyful work of art, full of love for life.
