Fernando Alonso will return to Alpine for the 2022 Formula One season, according to the French team. The Spaniard returned to F1 this season, which was supposed to coincide with the implementation of the new restrictions, but due to the global epidemic, he signed a one-plus-one deal to keep his options open in the future.
After negotiating a contract extension, Alpine has confirmed Fernando Alonso for the 2022 Formula One season.
After agreeing an extension to continue partnering Esteban Ocon at Alpine for the foreseeable future, the two-time Formula One champion’s future is safe. Alonso stated of the announcement, “I’m very glad to finalize the contract extension with Alpine F1 Team till 2022.” “From the time I returned to this team, I felt at ease and was greeted with open arms. At Enstone and Viry-Châtillon, it’s a pleasure to work with some of our sport’s best minds once more. Everyone has had a difficult season, but we’ve made development as a team, and the outcome in Hungary is a terrific indication of that growth. We’re aiming for more pleasant memories for the rest of the season, as well as, more importantly, with the new Formula 1 regulations coming in next year. I’ve long advocated for a level playing field and change in the sport, and the 2022 season will provide an excellent opportunity to do so. I’m looking forward to the rest of this year and competing for Alpine in 2022 alongside Esteban.” Alonso started the season slowly, like other drivers who transferred teams between the 2020 and ’21 seasons, but he has quickly caught up to Ocon.
Prior to the summer break, he put in possibly his best effort to date at the Hungarian Grand Prix, holding off a charging Lewis Hamilton for 10 laps. His brilliant defensive driving ultimately won the race for his team-mate, delaying Hamilton long enough to prevent him from reaching his team-mate before the finish line. Laurent Rossi, the CEO of the Alpine team, stated that Alonso’s re-signing demonstrated Alpine’s commitment to the future, and that Alonso’s commitment was an affirmation of what the team hopes to achieve in the coming seasons under the new regulations. Rossi remarked, “We are really happy to confirm Fernando for next season, collaborating with Esteban.” “For us, it’s the ideal driver lineup, one of the best on the field. It works in a very complementary fashion, with both teams providing raw talent and speed, as well as an unwavering team spirit that helped us win our first game in Hungary. “Since his return to the sport at the start of this year, Fernando has wowed us all. His devotion, teamwork, and emphasis on getting the most out of the team is fantastic to experience and to be a part of. His performance in Hungary demonstrated his racing heritage and reminded everyone of his driving prowess.
As we enter the final development and optimization phase of the 2022 chassis and power unit, I am confident that we will greatly benefit from Fernando’s knowledge and experience. “He is as hungry for success as we are, and he is putting forth every effort to make it a reality. For the time being, we must concentrate on producing a strong second half of the season, extracting the maximum from every race, and ensuring we finish as high as possible in the constructors’ standings. This will place us in a strong position for the coming year and the enormous opportunities that it will bring.”
