Frances Tiafoe’s victory over Rafael Nadal at the US Open stood out for three reasons

Rank 22 In a match in the fourth round of the US Open in New York on Monday, Frances Tiafoe of the United States defeated second-seeded Rafael Nadal of Spain 6-4 4-6 6-4 6-3. Nadal’s chances of capturing what would have been a record-tying sixth US Open title and his third Grand Slam trophy of the year were halted by the 24-year-old Tiafoe with this victory.

On Wednesday, Tiafoe will square off against Andrey Rublev of Russia. We will now examine three aspects of the game that stood out: Tiafoe played aggressive tennis to win the opening set. For the first six games, both players kept their serves intact, but Tiafoe secured the crucial break in the seventh game and kept his serve afterward to take the lead, 5-3.
By serving out the final game in the first set in the tenth, the Americans eventually prevailed. From the start, Tiafoe used an aggressive strategy to target the 36-year-old Spaniard. He frequently played approach shots before moving closer to the goal to volley points home.
Additionally, Nadal used his sliced returns too frequently, giving his rival enough short balls to make forehand winners. From the start, Tiafoe’s offensive strategy and Nadal’s defensive skills were in competition. Nadal, though, had a very recognizable comeback in the second set. He was able to tie the match by breaking Tiafoe once and never losing his own serve.
Tiafoe continued to play aggressively in the second set as well, but his backhand wing was prone to mistakes. Utilizing the aforementioned, Nadal forced Tiafoe to roam from side to side in order to gauge the American’s court coverage. The Spaniard moved fluidly as well, and he took advantage of Tiafoe’s high-risk strategy to make a couple of strong forehand passes.
The second set’s reversal did not deter Tiafoe, who enhanced his performance to win the following two sets. He broke Nadal twice more in the second set, including in the match’s penultimate game, and needed just one break to win the third set.
Throughout the game, Tiafoe repeatedly rushed the goal, winning the majority of the corresponding points. The American won the game with 18 aces, and his serve helped him out a few times as well. Nadal also delivered 18 aces while serving well. He did, however, make nine double errors. Tiafoe finished the match with 49 winners against Nadal’s 33 thanks to his forehand, which he used frequently.
