It cannot be denied that the success of a movie project is due in large part to the investment in proper costumes. Revealing the behind-the-scenes costume design meticulously invested for the movie project dune
Writer Frank Herbert is famous for his complicated plot construction. His literary works have many nuances and varied details. Perhaps for that reason, when director Denis Villeneuve decided to bring the thrilling details of his work “Dune” to the big screen, the cast and crew had to work at full capacity to be able to strip. describe the author’s ideas.
As for the costumes used in “Dune”, the number of costumes that meet the movie’s setting about 10,000 years in the future is very large. Therefore, Jacqueline West invited Bob Morgan to work on this project together. As close friends and partners for many years, the two work well together in design work.
Designer Bob Morgan has experience working as a costume supervisor in previous blockbusters such as “Inception” and “Man of Steel”. This helped him clearly understand what needs to be done to perfect the fashion of the movie “Dune” in the most perfect way.
The first designs made in the film were the iconic “Dune” stillsuit armor worn by the Freman people living on the planet Arrakis. The outfit has the ability to cool the body, recycling water such as sweat into drinking water to survive in the harsh desert.
“ Stillsuits are the main element of novels, so we wanted to focus on making them as good as possible ,” says costume designer Bob Morgan. “ These protective suits can fit many different body shapes and still look good when 1.98m tall actor Jason Momoa wears them .”
To make the stillsuit perfect, Jacqueline West and Bob Morgan collaborated with Jose Fernandez, a costume designer from Ironhead Studio. With many years of experience making superhero costumes in super blockbusters, Fernandez successfully built a powerful superhero empire with a series of designs such as Gal Gadot’s legendary armor in the role of Wonder Woman or Wonder Woman. Men’s batsuit from Ben Afflect and many other popular superhero costumes.
In “Dune”, the challenge for him was how to create a multi-use item that has to be aesthetically pleasing. “ Basically, the stillsuit is a survival equipment for the harsh environment of the planet Arrakis, but we also have to shoot in the same extreme temperature conditions, ” said designer Bob Morgan. “ Therefore, they must be very airy, allowing the actors to move and act easily .”
The next design is a gray-brown jumpsuit inspired by actual combat armor. “ The first time we let people try on it was really surprising ,” said designer Jacqueline West. “ Timothée Chalamet started crawling on the floor and doing sand steps, then Rebecca Ferguson did some jiujitsu moves. It’s been amazing to see the cast wearing them not only looking good, but helping them express their body language so perfectly when wearing them .”
When Paul (Timothée Chalamet) and his family arrive on the planet Arrakis, their costumes represent the status of a prestigious aristocracy. To make everything so perfect, Jacqueline West drew inspiration from royal attire when designing costumes for the Atreides family and other entourage. “
We had to deal with the decline of a monarchy, so the Romanovs were the most obvious reference, ” she revealed. “ Their uniforms are very elegant and I have brought that spirit into the clothes of Paul, Duke Leto and the people of Caladan .”
As the duke’s son, Paul had a prosperous life but everything fell apart after the death of his father. To express that change, fashion is the most ideal tool. Designer Jacqueline West sought inspiration from British director Sir David Lean’s “Doctor Zhivago” and “Lawrence of Arabia” for Paul’s character’s wardrobe. “
When Paul was still living in the palace, he wore a Zhivago-inspired coat with a sharp cut, unbuttoned because I thought the buttons and zippers weren’t appropriate for the futuristic setting .” Gradually, his clothes became more streamlined. Until he moved to the desert and became the leader of the Fremen tribe, his clothes were bold with fashion inspired by the movie “Lawrence of Arabia”.
