As training camp and preseason play continue, the Pittsburgh Steelers are dealing with both injury and penalty concerns.
Important Defensive Players Out
Sunday’s training session was missing by several important defensive players, including defensive end DeMarvin Leal (undisclosed), defensive lineman Keeanu Benton (eye), and edge rusher Alex Highsmith (groin). In addition, injuries were sustained during practice by wide receiver Tarik Black and cornerback Kalon Barnes.
Joey Porter Jr.’s Issues with Penalties Remain
Joey Porter Jr., a second-year cornerback, is still having trouble with penalties, especially when it comes to touching receivers while the ball is in the air. This has been a persistent problem since his college days, as seen in the preseason opener versus Houston. Teryl Austin, the defensive coordinator, said that there was room for improvement and that “we will continue to address that issue.” It is our responsibility to mentor him and assist him in avoiding those errors; it is his responsibility to use that guidance and advance.”
The Steelers will have difficulties throughout preseason play and training camp. Their success in the upcoming season will depend on how well they handle injuries, discipline, and depth.
