Many hockey fans have likely noticed the letters ‘A’ or ‘C’ on the jerseys of various hockey players and wondered what they meant. If you’ve ever watched sports, you’re certainly aware with the concept of a team captain, which is exactly what the C stands for. However, the A stands for ‘alternative captain.’

In case you hadn’t noticed, hockey does things a little differently than other sports. In addition, the manner captains are named in hockey is a little different. Each team in the National Hockey League can only have one captain. A C is normally worn on the upper left side of the clothing by that player.
Up to two alternate captains can be named by a squad. A squad can also have three alternate captains if no captain is named. However, don’t mistake the A for ‘assistant’ captain; the position is designated as ‘alternative’ captain. Alternate captains wear the A on the upper left half of their shirt, or on the upper right if space is limited.
WHAT IS A CAPTAIN’S ROLE IN HOCKEY?
A captain’s primary responsibility is to communicate with the referees when penalties are called or when rules are being interpreted. The captain of the squad is the only player allowed to take these signals to the bench for the coaches to hear. If the captain is on the bench, injured, or serving a penalty, the alternate captains take over.
According to NHL rules, that’s the end of the captain’s role. The captain’s and alternate captains’ roles, however, go beyond the regulation book. The captain is more of a team leader, someone who is admired and respected by fans, teammates, coaches, and management. They are the team’s leader, are expected to function as a role model, work as a liaison between players and coaches or management, and are frequently the team’s face at public events or ceremonies.
WHAT GOES INTO SELECTING A HOCKEY TEAM CAPTAIN?
How a player becomes a team captain is not governed by any rules or guidelines. The captain of various teams is chosen by a vote of the team. The captain is sometimes chosen by the coach or management. A captain is usually a seasoned athlete who has earned the honour.
And, in most cases, they are already a leader in the locker room, and their selection is considered as a vote of confidence in their leadership abilities by the team. The captain is becoming more and more of a star player—sometimes it’s not so much the veteran as it is the leading scorer, even if it arrives at a young age.
Sidney Crosby was appointed captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins before he turned 20, making him the fourth-youngest player in NHL history to do so. When Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers first donned the C on his uniform in 2016, he was a month younger than Crosby, making him the second-youngest player in NHL history.
GOALKEEPERS ARE NO LONGER ELIGIBLE TO SERVE AS CAPTAINS.
When Bill Durnan captained the Montreal Canadiens in 1947–48, he was the last goalie to wear the C on his uniform. The NHL decided after that year that goalies could no longer be captains because it was too disruptive to the game for a goalkeeper to skate in for an official ruling, convey it to the bench, and then return to the crease. Goalkeepers are unable to act as alternate captains. Before the regulation change, six NHL goalies were named captains of their teams.
THE DISCUSSION ABOUT HOCKEY’S C’S AND A’S
Being named captain of a hockey team is an honour that can lead to lengthy disputes amongst supporters over the Cs and the As. It’s also not indefinite. Players have received the C from enraged coaches for bad performance on the ice or after a brawl with a coach or team official. Some team captains have also quit due to internal conflicts or in protest of a team decision. Darryl Sittler, a centre for the Toronto Maple Leafs, famously took the C off his sweater and resigned after the team moved his best friend in 1980.
When your favourite player wears the C for the team you’ve supported for a lifetime, it’s a thrilling moment. Being appointed captain is a beautiful icing on top of a long, illustrious career, an external sign of the respect that player has earned both on and off the rink.
