of consumption and disregard for the effects of our consumption on the climate, the world will change very drastically within our lifetime. Dozens if not hundreds of coastal cities will become uninhabitable as the sea level rises. This will cause mass immigration of “climate refugees”, and will cause a huge strain on resources, as millions of people will abandon cities such as Miami and Rio De Janeiro in favor of inland cities that will not be prepared to accomodate the rapid influx of people. It is quite depressing to watch our current presidential administration disregard this issue in favor of economic prosperity, and I can only attribute such blatant i see accept respect support admire love you lgbtq shirt disregard to selfishness, as our current generation will not have to face the consequences of our actions and policies. I feel that climate change is very real, it is happening, and it is our responsibility to help reduce our impact on it. We as humans are extremely liable for the damage that has occurred, and as of now, it is only getting worse. The hurricane that just tore up North Carolina is a prime and current example of how climate change is causing damage to us, and issues like rising sea levels, harsher storms, more extreme climates, and poorer air quality are only going to increase in scope if we do not make serious changes. I believe that climate change is the most pressing issue facing our race in this generation. With the industrialism that has affected our planet in recent years, environmental scientists have shown how the pollutants have taken effect on the quality and quantity of natural resources.
I think many people rationalize that climate change is not an immediate threat, but this is a selfish point of view. It may not be a threat to these people in their urban living environment, but it very much is a threat in other parts of the world. Sustainability should be a primary focus of governments across the globe. On average, human beings worldwide have too little of a regard for the earth that we call home. We go through our daily lives prioritizing convenience over our well-being. From what I understand, climate change is primarily due to the greenhouse effect which is warming that results when the atmosphere traps heat. Two gases that play a major roll in this effect are carbon dioxide and methane, both of which levels are rising due to the human populations carelessness. While carbon dioxide is released within the atmosphere naturally through respiration and volcano eruptions, human activities such as deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels are significantly increasing the gas level, thus warming the earth at a rapid rate. Methane levels are also rising due to the decomposition of waste in landfills and agriculture management. Therefore, it is incredibly frustrating that we have taken such a beautiful world and damaged it. Two years ago, I went to Nepal to help rebuild a local school. There, I witnessed the aftermath of Nepal’s devastating earthquake, which might be caused by climate change. It is one thing to see people in less developed countries struggling on TV, but another to personally experience those struggles. Suffering power outages hours a day, playing soccer with barefoot children on cement, and watching vehicles and pedestrians navigate streets thick with mud, I realized that there were a considerable number of people who desperately needed help. While eager to help, I was also aware that individual effort was not enough. At Cornell, I learned not only about the science behind climate change, but also the human aspect of the issue. As of today, it is encouraging to see people hting for the environment, but meanwhile upset to see all the efforts hindered by socioeconomic reasons. I want to start by expressing how little I really know about climate change. With that, I do know that it is real because our glaciers have been melting at a very high rate and continue to melt. The green house gases that humans use causes this heat trapping nature of carbon dioxide to reflect the heat being released into space back onto the earth, warming the earth. This can cause temperatures on earth to continuously rise which can melt glaciers, shorten winter, elongate crop season, cause droughts and heat waves, rise sea levels, and cause hurricanes to be stronger. I believe that this is a serious issue that needs more attention than it is being given. We do a great job at recognizing issues in our Earth, but not as great of a job at acting to preventsolve them. We need to find an alternative to ffossil fuels or find a way to emit them from space so that they do not reflect the heat back on earth.
