the onset of the Industrial Revolution, the Earth’s atmosphere has been rapidly changing, and its consequences are far-reaching. Just this past week, Hurricane Florence devastated North Carolina, and research concluded that global warming intensified the effects of the calamity. Global warming isn’t just causing temperatures to rise, but it’s also causing natural disasters, melting polar ice caps, and threatening human lives. Such dire consequences mandate that more attention should be paid to reducing carbon emissions and taking steps to mitigate global warming; however, inactivity by international leaders are enabling commercial interests to supersede our environmental consciousness. Given the immense impact of the environment on the population and the fact that we can take steps to make significant progress against global warming, such inactivity is mind-boggling. An immense effort will be required to avoid the worse consequences of climate change, and that weekend forecast painting with no chance of house cleaning shirt should be one of our most pressing priorities. Personally, I have no doubt in my mind that climate change is an urgent, real, and pressing issue in society today. It is our job as humans to protect and respect the planet we live on and it makes me angry that some people will deny that climate change even exists. Over the past year of my life, I have grown increasingly passionate about the environment and I hope to become an environmental lawyer. I dream to use my education and passion to ensure that society doesn’t abuse the planet. Even though I sometimes feel that my actions just as one person won’t have the largest impact, I still try to believe that every action can make a world of a difference. The lack of policy on climate change at the moment is quite disturbing. I’m not entirely sure what causes political leaders to respond, “We need to focus on terrorism first” when prompted to respond about what they are going to do about climate change. I’m baffled that despite the plethora of evidence available and before our very eyes about climate change going on RIGHT NOW, political leaders refuse to take any sort of action. It’s ridiculous and slightly terrifying. What if we could have all leaders who don’t think climate change exists take a mandatory class that educates them on
That is all. Climate change is a very apparent issue that not many people consider in their day-to-day actions. Personally, I take into account how my everyday actions can affect the environment. I have always been interested in this issue and stay as up to date as I can, but some of the concepts had been slightly abstract. However, when I travelled to Iceland to attend a forum on sustainability and climate change, I learned an immense amounts about the facts of the topic and how I can make a difference by changing certain aspects of my life. I most recently been updated because of the political implications that are so newly related to the issue. Hearing about certain regions of the world or species in their natural habitats that will be destroyed because of climate change upsets me, and continues to inspire me to be an agent for positive change. Climate change is a pretty big topic. First there’s one thing that needs to be clarified, it’s the difference between the natural climate change that happens over thousands of years and is cyclical and the super accelerated climate change humans have been causing since the industrial revolution and these days more than ever. What’s very important is acknowledging that we are causing the second one and not try to hide behind the fact that the earth’s climate naturally fluctuates. The immediate effects of what we are causing are already clearly tangible and we need to do something about it to avoid huge disasters. The earth itself isn’t damaged by climate change, but all living species on earth, us included are. So by hting climate change, we help ourselves! With my current state of knowledge, I view climate change as one of the most important threats to my own and human existence. I dont feel the need to justify that climate change is real, actively happening, or a threat to our existence, because I feel that its one of those topics.
