Norse mythology’s most identifiable and possibly most popular character is also Norse mythology’s most recognizable and perhaps most popular figure. Thor is rarely seen without his trusted hammer, Mjolnir, when performing his many heavenly tasks. Despite the fact that Mjolnir is only linked with Thor, he is one of just a handful individuals in Norse mythology capable of lifting the world’s most famous hammer.
Who is capable of wielding Thor’s hammer?
Mjolnir was given to him by Loki after being cast and crafted by dwarf brothers. Thrym, the giant, stole it, and it was only regained via deception. Thor was the god of thunder and the defender-in-chief of both Asgard (the world of the gods) and Midgard (the land of the humans), and Mjolnir was usually in his possession. Thor was worshipped in Viking mythology for protection against calamity and injury, for sanctifying weddings and formalizing agreements, and for general problem-solving. Thor’s hammer was more than a weapon of immense destruction, capable of leveling mountains with a single blow. Mjolnir was an instrument of justice and peace in Thor’s righteous hands.
In Norse mythology, can anyone lift Mjolnir?
Apart from the gigantic Thor, there are few instances of Mjolnir being possessed by any person, god, giant, or otherwise, in Viking literature and Norse mythology. From this, it may be deduced that Thor is the true owner and bearer of Mjolnir, and that only a few people have ever raised Thor’s hammer since its birth. Because Thor and his hammer are practically inseparable, the chances of lifting Mjolnir are limited to none. According to legend, the sound of thunder in the sky signaled that Thor and Mjolnir were slaying giants or other forms of evil someplace. And, like a boomerang soaring back to an aboriginal hunter in the bush, Mjolnir always found its way back to Thor’s waiting hand, no matter how far away. It’s one thing to lift and handle Mjolnir; it’s another to wield it and unleash its enormous abilities, and Thor is alone in this regard. In reality, Thor is the only character in Norse mythology who has wielded Mjolnir’s full strength (his sons will likely continue the hammer’s tremendous legacy after Ragnarok’s death).
Other than Thor, who can lift Mjolnir?
Thor’s hammer does not have the mass of a small planet, nor does it weigh millions of pounds, contrary to popular perception and modern interpretations of Old Norse stories. Mjolnir also lacks the power to identify the righteousness or worthiness of those who want to lift it, allowing some to wield it while others are denied. This is not to mean that everybody who comes across Thor’s hammer will be able to raise it and use its incredible powers in the same way as the weapon’s true master.
