Cartier continues to search for ideas in the brand’s archives to honor designs that have gone down in heritage history.
Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Cartier pebble watch
According to information from Bloomberg, in 2022 Cartier surpassed Omega to become the second highest-grossing watch brand globally. Cartier’s strength lies in its vast archive of designs born of extraordinary vision.
Cartier watches are a work of art, an aesthetic endeavor, and a whole that aims to be unique, based on continuously innovative and distinctive forms inspired by Cartier’s heritage. That’s why people search, buy and collect the rarest of Cartier enthusiasts’ watches.
Recently, Cartier has re-launched a number of creations for those who are knowledgeable and want to collect their designs. New versions are recreated as close as possible to the original design. The designs all represent milestones in the brand’s watchmaking history and celebrate Cartier’s distinctive timepieces.
The latest design reborn by Cartier is the Pebble, a watch shaped like a pebble. First launched in 1972, this year, the Pebble model officially celebrates its 50th birthday. In 2022, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the design, Cartier reborn and upgraded this watch. The new version is limited to only 150 pieces worldwide.
The original 1972 design was born in London when the foggy city was the center of fashion and culture. This was the era of the Mod and Swinging Sixties movement, the austere post-World War II rebellious and playful lifestyle waves.
During this period, Cartier London was run by Jean-Jacques Cartier. The grandson of founder Louis François Cartier decided that wristwatches were the future. He, therefore, promotes the development of wrist watch making at Cartier London, with a series of designs “like no other”. For example, the Crash model has a distorted face that requires complicated movement to operate; and the Pebble model with a contrasting square and round face.
Cartier is known for its elegant dinner watches, and the Pebble is no exception. However, the fancy watch shape gives it a strange and eye-catching appearance.
Faithful to the original 1972 model, the new Cartier Pebble watch has a round 18K gold case like a pebble, inside a square dial with rounded corners. Pairing these two square and round shapes seems to be a favorite of the Cartier house – as the Cartier Pasha line does the opposite, placing a square border inside the round dial!
No matter how funny the form, elegance is present in the dial and strap. The eggshell-colored dial, Roman numerals, and sword-shaped hands in blue represent Cartier’s fine watchmaking craftsmanship. The light brown calfskin leather strap with a gold pin buckle adds a truly sophisticated vintage touch to the product.
This watch is incredibly thin: Only 6.3mm. To achieve this svelte form, Cartier employs one of Cartier’s flattest hand-wound movements: the ultra-thin Caliber 430 MC movement.
Last year, a 1972 vintage Cartier Pebble appeared at auction. Due to its rare design (there are only 3 original pieces in Cartier archives) and good quality like new, the product has reached an auction price of up to 403,000 Swiss Francs – equivalent to 10.1 billion VND!
Therefore, Cartier watch lovers in general, and rare watch collectors, in particular, cannot ignore the 2022 version of the Cartier Pebble. This is the first time Cartier has reinterpreted the Pebble watch in 50 years. Therefore, it is certain that these 150 models will be sought after by watch collectors.
