Following a contentious 3-2 defeat to the Florida Panthers in Game 4, the Boston Bruins are now in the standings to be eliminated. The game-tying goal was scored by Sam Bennett in the third period under dubious circumstances. Bennett had previously become a Bruins rival after a disputed hit on Brad Marchand in Game 3.
Bennett scored the goal by giving Bruins player Charlie Coyle a powerful check in the back that knocked him into goalie Jeremy Swayman. Bennett took advantage of the open net when Swayman was unable to make a save due to this interference.
With complete confidence that goaltender interference would be called, the Bruins challenged the goal right away. To the Bruins’ dismay, the call on the ice was upheld after a quick review. Afterward, the Panthers scored the game-winning goal, forcing the Bruins to the verge of defeat.
Coach Jim Montgomery of the Boston Bruins expressed his displeasure with the decision, saying that the team thought Coyle’s meddling with Swayman was evident. Both Swayman and Coyle expressed their disapproval of the choice, highlighting the fact that Swayman was unable to perform his job due to the contact.
Naturally, Bennett defended his conduct, saying that even without Coyle, he would have scored the goal before Swayman could have reacted.
The NHL supported the referees’ judgment, claiming that Swayman was still able to perform his job despite the hit and that the video review validated the call made on the ice. That explanation, though, did not exactly calm the Bruins and their supporters down.
Don Sweeney, general manager of the Boston Bruins, faulted the lack of openness in the decision-making process and demanded that representatives take greater responsibility and give direct answers to inquiries rather than evasive responses. He underlined the need to keep an eye on the team’s performance instead of lingering on officiating disputes.
Now that their season is in jeopardy, the Bruins have to concentrate on winning Game 5 in Florida. To go forward, they must defeat the Panthers’ momentum and win three straight games. After losing to the Panthers in the playoffs the previous year, the team is still confident in their talents and plans to get revenge.
