Sofía Jirau went down in fashion history as the first Victoria’s Secret lingerie model to suffer from Down syndrome. The 24-year-old girl from Puerto Rico is one of the new faces in Victoria’s Secret’s Love Cloud campaign. The lingerie collection she modeled is designed for different body sizes, instead of just promoting the hot hourglass figure inherently associated with the lingerie brand’s image.
Victoria’s secret invites a girl with down syndrome to be a model
Talking about the opportunity to work with Victoria’s Secret, Sofía Jirau said: “I dreamed of this opportunity, I worked hard to achieve it, and now it has come true. Today, I can share with you this big secret…I am the first Victoria’s Secret model with Down syndrome!”.
Those who follow New York Fashion Week will probably recognize Sofía Jirau. In February 2022, she participated in the runway show for Fall Winter 2021.
This girl is also very talkative on social networks, calling on those who dream of becoming a model to ignore all fears to pursue a career. “There are no limits to achieving your dream, if you firmly believe in it. Thank you Victoria’s Secret for believing in me. This is just the beginning,” Sofía Jirau said.
Besides Sofía Jirau, there are many other diverse models participating in Victoria’s Secret’s Love Cloud campaign. From salt and pepper bodybuilder Jailyn Matthews; to Celilo Miles, an Indian firefighter of the Nez Perce tribe; plus-size model Paloma Elsesser; Valentina Sampaio, Victoria’s Secret’s first transgender model; and even familiar faces of the high-end model village like Hailey Bieber and Adut Akech.
“The Love Cloud Collection is an important milestone in the evolution of the brand,” said Victoria’s Secret creative director Raúl Martinez. “This campaign defines the new Victoria’s Secret that we are all building.”
Once upon a time, Victoria’s Secret believed that you were only attractive if you had an hourglass figure like its angels. This ideal of the company makes many girls who are not perfect beautiful become self-deprecating. And it also alienated customers from Victoria’s Secret.
Objects change stars. After a painful fall and loss of the lingerie market to other brands such as Third Love, Savage x Fenty, Aerie… Victoria’s Secret has understood the importance of respecting its actual customers. Replacing angels with models representing actual customers, designing lingerie in various sizes for different body shapes, the Victoria’s Secret brand proves itself to be improving day by day.
In terms of design style, projects between Prada and Adidas often emphasize minimalism, using the dominant white-black color. Minimalism is a favorite style of Miuccia Prada, the brand’s creative director, and she imposed it on her handshake with Adidas.
And Gucci cannot be minimalist! Gucci’s maximalism makes the Adidas 3-Stripes very “crazy” and dramatic. I’m writing this while looking at the closing corset – maybe this is the first time the Adidas logo has appeared on such a corset!
“We share a consensus on striped designs,” says Alessandro Michele of the similarity between Adidas’ 3-Stripes and Gucci’s blue-and-red striped Web motif. He used stripes to connect the two sides. Adidas’ simple stripes combined with Gucci’s vanity, oh what a match.
