With his Christmas decorations, a Port Washington resident has converted his yard into a little movie set since 2018, but the homemade props are more than a tribute to his favorite holiday film. A red contribution box for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital may be found among the makeshift diving board, pool, and life-size actor cutouts from “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” Andy Jarr placed a life-size portrait of Cousin Eddie, one of the film’s key characters, in the subdivision in 2018 to “raise a laugh.”

Jarr replicated the film’s diving board sequence using a cutout of Mary and a projector showing portions from the film the following Christmas. The projector shows six movie sequences with a total runtime of about 20 minutes. Jarr cut the passages to fit the PG-13 rating of the film. This Christmas, Jarr said, donations totaled $1,222. Jarr stated of his neighbors, “They love it.” “They believe it is a good cause, they enjoy the film, and they appreciate the funds raised for St. Jude.” Jarr and his family stopped in Medina, Ohio, on their way to Niagara Falls in 2019, to see Castle Noel, a year-round Christmas museum with movie memorabilia. Cousin Eddie’s 1972 Ford Condor II RV was one of the museum’s movie-related objects, which Jarr made a point of photographing. He took the photo to a vinyl wrapping shop, where it was printed on a plastic board. For wind resistance, he tied the board to some scrap aluminum pool fencing and hung it beside his garage. People frequently ask Jarr where he got his decorations, he said. “These aren’t your run-of-the-mill decorations from Home Depot,” he explained. “It’s clear that some thought has gone into it.”
