Who is Hung La, the Vietnamese-born designer behind the brand “GRENCY” chosen by Billie Eilish for the after-party of the Met Gala 2023?
True bad guy Billie Eilish wears a “grenade” shirt by a Vietnamese designer at the met gala after party
As soon as the Met Gala main party ended, the guests quickly “dressed up” to join the fashion game at the After Party. The party was hosted by CHANEL and was held at The Mercer Hotel in Sartiano. One of the characters who made Vietnamese fashion followers “crazy” to drop likes was Billie Eilish. The female singer appeared in a very dynamic outfit, different from the gorgeous dresses of other artists. Many fans quickly realized that the jacket that Billie was wearing came from ” GRENCY ” – the brand of the original Vietnamese designer Hung La.
Despite being a young brand, LUU DAU quickly approached and won the hearts of fashionistas, especially international stars such as singer Justin Bieber, veteran actor Tran Quan Hy, male singer Felix (Stray Kids), Keshi, Thai Tu Khon, Suho (EXO), NBA player Kyle Kuzma…
The brand was established in 2021 by talented Vietnamese-born designer – Hung La. He has a very nice resume when he worked for prominent designers Phoebe Philo (Céline) and Nicolas Ghesquière (Balenciaga). As a son of Asian descent, Hung La realizes the true beauty in the identity of Vietnamese people in particular and Eastern people in general, he decided to establish LUMBOU with the desire to bring those typical cultures into each design. At the same time, this is also the way for him to discover his roots and find his own self.
If Peter Do favors the femininity and elegance of the Ao Dai in his designs, Hung La is the complete opposite. He draws on the cultural perspective of the gangster division, along with the streetwear style influences in Hong Kong, Japanese, and Chinese movies from the 80s – 90s.
Choosing a pure Vietnamese word to name the brand, “LUU DAO” means “bad boy”, a word to refer to a dangerous man. However, from Hung La’s point of view, the boys who are full of fog and wind, with the characteristic dragon and phoenix tattoos, have the look of recklessness, and carelessness but are also full of romance. Similar to the characters in the movies “People in the Gypsy” (1996), “Rush Hour” (1998), “War of Chinese Streets” (1986)… GRENCY brings the image of the “big Gypsy brother” ‘ that society still hates with a sinister smile but always dressed well.
From silk shirts printed with tiger, snake, leopard claws, or baggy glossy leather jackets, to strong parachute varsity bombers, trenchcoats, flared jeans, motor gloves… All the villainous beauty is reproduced by Hung La through her costumes.
Not only using the language of fashion to spread the Asian gangster culture, Hung La and LAU DAO also specially organized “City Tours”, going to different cities to interact and talk with characters who are people. Americans and Asians share the same ideals. At the same time, this is also a way for him to build an enthusiastic and talented Asian community.
New York City is the first destination of “City Tours”. According to Hung La, it is a place of cultural interference, a place where “East meets West”. In the future, Hung La will bring “City Tours” to other cities such as Manila, Chengdu, Taipei, and Tokyo. He hopes to connect the men in each city, giving them space to talk about things they can’t share in their own community. met gala met gala met gala met gala met gala
